New Year’s trivia
Posted on: December 1, 2017
It’s the end of 2017 and I am coming to terms with the reality of how often I can send out a newsletter. The four different 3-day and 4-day classes I took over the last three months used up any extra time. But of course, I feel strongly about continuing my studies and how this makes me a better practitioner. So, I felt this newsletter could be just fun trivia. Here are some interesting bits of info that have really stood out to me:
- 75% of the muscle fibers that make up the diaphragm are resistant to fatigue. The majority of fibers are slow-twitch oxidative, which use oxygen more efficiently.
- Adults contain about 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Estimates suggest a few miles of blood vessels per 1lb of body fat.
- There are 800-1,000 minor salivary glands in the mouth producing an average of 1.5L per day.
- 700 strains of bacteria have been recorded in the human mouth.
- Opiorphin is a naturally occurring chemical found in human saliva that is a stronger painkilling substance than morphine.
- The Enteric Nervous system (a.k.a. the Second Brain) is the neurological network that runs through the stomach and intestines, and it actually begins in the esophagus.
- We absorb 80-90 grams of protein daily via the small intestine sloughing off cells from its own walls of microvilli.
- There are 150 articulations in the thoracic “hard frame”, also known as the ribcage, which refers to structures that move in relationship to each other.
- Normal respiration alone undergoes more than 3 million micromovements.
- Each minute the heart pumps 5 quarts of blood through the body. Red blood cells can circumnavigate the entire body in less than 20 seconds.
I hope you enjoyed these amazing facts about the human body. There is an endless amount to learn and discoveries continue to be made.
My very best wishes to you and your family in 2018!
